- Deaf - Being Deaf with a capitable 'D' is like Being French with a capital 'F', it means the individual identify himself or hersoef as part of the culture
- SASL - for South African Sign Language
- ICT - stands for Information and Communication Technologies.
Being Deaf
- Deaf people can be identified through Sign Language, not speaking and hearing.
- Deaf people use South African Sign Language as their communicating tool, and some prefers lip reading.
- As long as we've Deaf people, we have South African Sign Language and have to learn it.
Deaf culture can be described as the way you behave as a Deaf person or the way you live and the values you hold. There are some features inherent in Deaf Culture. Deaf rely on a Language and that is a visual, not spoken language. Therefore a sense of touch is important, non-verbal body and facial expression is far more sophisticated and subtle than with the hearing impaired, so that they can identify the different ways of behaviours between both parties.
Deaf people enjoy life just like the hearing impaired, but in different way. And a Deaf person prefers a Deaf group for communication and understanding.
If hearing impaired people want to get involved in Deaf society, it's important to know South African Sign Language to be able to communicate well.
With the many challenges Deaf people face in their everyday lives, it has become impossible and a long way to go for a Deaf person to achieve and realise his dreams.
Deaf people view life in a different way from the hearing impaired due to lack of proper communication understanding, wherein Deaf are unable to get enough education or have difficulty in furthering their studies due to unavailability of South African Sign Language interpreters at education institutions.
It has become unfinished business for the Deaf since they can't get access to information. While technology can play an important role in their lives, many Deaf do not have access to computers, cell-phones etc., and the problem is worst at school.
With the many challenges Deaf people face in their everyday lives, it has become impossible and a long way to go for a Deaf person to achieve and realise his dreams.
ICT can play an important role in Deaf lives. The use of technologies like computers, internet, email, MMS and SMS on cellphones can help in terms of communication, sharing information and providing services to Deaf people. Deaf people use either simple text, signing images and videos to read the messages.
- Videos can be recorded, saved and send to friends for communication.
- Deaf people write the text in terms of creating messages when communicating with friends.
- Sign Language communicating images can be used where Deaf select the images to create Sign Language sentences and send to friends, then their friends can play the images on their computer or cellphones.
